Surgery faculty to discuss educating medical students

Dr. Laura Vick, associate professor of surgery and surgery clerkship director, will give the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds presentation, "Teaching the Teacher: Educating the Medical Student," from 8-9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Neurobiology faculty to uncover SCI metabolic dysfunction

Dr. Bernadette Grayson, assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomical sciences, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics Seminar presentation, "Uncovering the Propensity Towards Metabolic Dysfunction After SCI: Using a Rodent Model of Thoracic Spinal Contusion," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Thursday, May 17

Surgeon General to speak at 'Lunch and Learn' event

The Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Jerome Adams, will present a Lunch and Learn session at UMMC from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in Room 124 of the medical education building. Lunch will be provided by the Associated Student Body.

Only the 20th surgeon general in the nearly 150-year history of the office, Adams is a board-certified anesthesiologist and former state health commissioner of Indiana. He has made opioid abuse a focal point of his administration.

ThinkArtMusic composer to offer 'Sound Remedy'

Dr. Igor Iwanek, a composer, performer and educator with ThinkArtMusic, L.L.C., SoundMind, will give the Faith Forum Lecture Series presentation, "Sound as Remedy," at noon on Thursday, May 17, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Attendees will "discover how sound paired with conscious breathing, rhythmical entrainment and sense internalization can serve as a powerful modern-day ailments' remedy and deep relaxation agent to be used effectively in hospital as well as daily life."

Mayo Clinic faculty to offer bipolar biobank lesson

Dr. Mark Frye, director of the Mayo Mood Clinic and Research Program, and Dr. Joanna Biernacka, director of the Mayo Clinic Psychiatric Genomics and Pharmagenomics Program, will give a Grand Rounds presentation, "Building a Bipolar Disorder Biobank: Lesson Learned," at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 21, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Mayo Clinic epidemiologist to talk pharmacogenomics opps

Dr. Suzette J. Bielinski, associate professor of epidemiology, Department of Health Science Research, Mayo Clinic, will give the University Research and Mayo Clinic presentation, "Pharmacogenomics: The Opportunities and Challenges of Clinical Implementation," from noon-1 p.m. on Monday, May 21, in lecture hall M124 of the medical education building.

JHS statistical geneticist to lead health disparities discussion

Dr. Solomon Musani, associate professor of medicine and Jackson Heart Study statistical geneticist, will lead the Health Disparities Journal Club session, "Gene-by-psychosocial Factor Interactions Influence Diastolic Blood Pressure in European and African Ancestry Populations: Meta-analysis of Four Cohort Studies," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, in conference room D in the student union.

Texas orthopaedist to give Freeland Lecture, kick off Resident Research Day

Dr. Milton Lee "Chip" Routt Jr., Dr. Andrew R. Burgess Endowed Chair and Professor of Othopaedic Surgery at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School at Houston, will give the Alan E. Freeland Research Lecture Series presentation, "Pelvic and Acetabular Update 2018," during the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation's annual Resident Research Day from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, June 1, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.
